What is RPL?
RPL is a process that assesses your existing skills, knowledge, and experience against the requirements of a qualification. If you can demonstrate competency, you may receive credit for units without completing full training.
Who is Eligible?
- Individuals with the legal right to study in Australia
- Individuals with relevant industry experience who can provide evidence of competency
- Currently or recently employed in a relevant role
- Holders of relevant qualifications, licences, or certifications
- Anyone who can demonstrate skills and knowledge against unit requirements
Note: RPL is assessed based on evidence of competency, not solely on years of experience. The quality and relevance of your evidence determines the outcome.
The 7-Step RPL Process

1 Initial Enquiry

2 Self-Assessment
Review the unit requirements and identify your relevant experience.
3 Evidence Gathering
Compile workplace documents, references, photos, videos, and work samples.
4 Evidence Submission
Submit your portfolio for assessment.
5 Assessor Evaluation
A qualified assessor reviews your evidence against unit requirements.
6 Gap Training
Complete targeted training for any gaps identified (where required).
7 Certification
Receive your nationally recognised qualification.
Evidence Types
RPL requires a portfolio of evidence demonstrating your competency. You can provide:
- Work samples and workplace documents
- Third-party reports from supervisors or employers
- Supervisor references and letters
- Photos and videos of work practice
- Workplace documents and records
- Certificates and licences
- Performance reviews and professional development records
