DELIVERY APPROACH
Swiss Institute delivers this qualification through two distinct pathways, determined by the Pre-Training Review (PTR). Each pathway is designed to meet the learner’s current skill level and professional circumstances, ensuring competency-based outcomes through either recognition of existing skills or structured learning.
RPL Pathway
This pathway is for experienced hospitality managers and supervisors who can demonstrate competency in hospitality management and supervision. Candidates must be able to provide valid, sufficient, authentic, and current evidence of competency against each unit requirement. The RPL pathway recognises existing competency and provides targeted gap training only where required.
Step 1 — Application and Self-Assessment
Candidate applies for RPL and completes a self-assessment checklist aligned to each unit and element, identifying areas of strength and gaps in competency.
Step 2 — Evidence Gathering
Candidate compiles a portfolio of evidence: work samples (service delivery plans, budgets, schedules, training materials, operational procedures), third-party reports, certificates from prior management or hospitality training, job descriptions and performance reviews, workplace documents (policies, procedures, performance metrics), and photos or case studies of hospitality operations management.
Step 3 — Assessor Evaluation
A qualified assessor reviews all evidence against unit requirements, conducts a professional conversation/interview, undertakes workplace observation of the candidate in a management role, and evaluates each unit and element against performance standards.
Step 4 — Gap Identification
Where evidence is insufficient for specific units or elements, the assessor identifies the exact gaps, which are documented and communicated to the candidate in writing.
Step 5 — Gap Training
Targeted training is provided ONLY for identified gaps — short classroom sessions on specific hospitality management topics, online modules, facilitated case study analysis and scenario planning, workplace projects addressing specific gap areas, mentoring sessions with experienced hospitality managers, and additional assessment activities. Gap training typically occurs over 4-12 weeks depending on the extent of gaps.
Step 6 — Final Assessment
After gap training is completed, the candidate is re-assessed on gap areas. The assessor confirms that all units are now assessed as Competent (C).
Step 7 — Certification
Upon successful completion of all 28 units, the qualification is issued within 30 calendar days.
Volume of Learning (RPL): 8-16 weeks (evidence gathering, assessment, gap training), involving 40-80 hours of direct assessor contact time.
Assessment Methods (RPL):
Portfolio of evidence, third-party reports, practical observation, professional conversation/interview, challenge tests, workplace projects, case study analysis.
Blended Delivery Pathway
This pathway is for hospitality professionals seeking to develop or formalise their management and leadership capabilities in hospitality services. The blended approach combines classroom instruction, workplace projects, online learning, and self-directed study to build comprehensive hospitality management competency.
Classroom-Based Studies (Face-to-Face)
Theory and practical sessions are conducted at Level 14, 333 Collins Street, Melbourne, covering hospitality service delivery models, food and beverage operations management, budgeting and financial management, team leadership and conflict resolution, strategic planning and performance analysis, and regulatory compliance (OHS, food safety, licensing). Sessions include practical case studies, scenario-based learning, group discussions, and assessment preparation workshops.
Online Learning and Assessment
Learning materials are accessed via the LMS: online theory modules covering hospitality management topics, interactive quizzes and knowledge assessments, case study submissions, written assessments, discussion forums, industry resources and templates, assignment and portfolio submission, and knowledge-based assessments prior to workplace assessment.
Self-Directed Study
Learners engage in independent study: research on hospitality management trends and service delivery models, case study analysis of hospitality operations and management scenarios, workplace projects focused on service delivery and F&B operations improvement, leadership portfolio development, reflection on professional practice and team interactions, and industry research and performance analysis.
Workplace Practice
For learners in employment: workplace projects focused on service delivery, operations, and F&B management; workplace observations by the trainer/assessor; mentoring relationships with experienced hospitality managers; practical application of budgeting, scheduling, and team leadership; development of management portfolio evidence and case studies; collaboration with workplace teams and stakeholders; and demonstration of compliance and governance practices.
Recognition of Existing Skills
Blended pathway learners can still apply for RPL or credit transfer for individual units where they can demonstrate existing competency, reducing the overall study load while maintaining assessment integrity. Where possible, learners engage in supervised workplace practice in hospitality venues to build and demonstrate management competencies.
Volume of Learning Justification
AQF Volume of Learning guidelines for Diploma: 1800-2400 hours (including all teaching and learning activities, assessment, and self-directed study).
Blended Pathway: Standalone pathway: 1800 hours over 78 weeks. Packaged pathway (with credit transfer from SIT40521): 900 hours over 38 weeks, covering the 11 core units and remaining elective units not credited from earlier qualifications. Credit transfer: students who have completed SIT40521 (or the packaged pathway from SIT30821 → SIT40521) will receive credit for common/equivalent units.
RPL Pathway:
Volume of learning requirements are met through recognition of the candidate’s prior learning and extensive industry management experience. The RPL process typically takes 8-16 weeks and involves 40-80 hours of direct assessor contact time.
